WHY TAKE THIS ROUTE?
The trek to the Hermitage of Gamogna is a journey that blends nature and spirituality.
CURIOSITY
The Hermitage of Gamogna, founded in the 11th century, is one of the most evocative and spiritual places in the Apennines. This ancient monastery, which has welcomed monks and nuns over the centuries in devotion and meditation, is now home to the Monastic Fraternities of Jerusalem. The sacred site is a living symbol of spirituality deeply connected with its natural surroundings. Built from stone and nestled in the silence of the woods, it offers a profound sense of serenity—ideal for those seeking a break from the chaos of everyday life.
The trek leading to the Hermitage is a rewarding experience through ancient woods, scenic ridges, and age-old paths. The route is about 10 km long with a 600-meter elevation gain, rated medium difficulty and suitable for well-prepared hikers. Starting from Marradi, you follow trail CAI 521, winding through the “Vicolo della Badia” and continuing through chestnut forests and open clearings. Along the way, you’ll encounter old stone houses and ruins that whisper stories of the past.
Reaching the Hermitage is an emotional moment: despite its remote location, it offers breathtaking views of the Apennines. Here, the monks of the Monastic Fraternities live in prayer, silence, and contemplation—far from the distractions of modern life. It’s a unique opportunity for anyone wishing to immerse themselves in a mystical atmosphere in harmony with nature.
The trail is well-marked and offers several variants, including a loop route to explore the ridgeline. Every step reveals the untouched beauty of this part of the Apennines.
