A building that combines Romanesque roots with Neoclassical taste, a treasure chest of precious paintings.
CURIOSITY
Of Romanesque origin, the Church of San Lorenzo was completely rebuilt in Neoclassical style in 1785. Its simple gabled façade is marked by flat pilasters; the interior has a single nave where two stucco altars with Ionic columns and capitals stand out.
The most valuable element is the cycle of paintings by the Master of Marradi, a painter active between 1498 and 1513, a pupil of Domenico Ghirlandaio. His name comes from five works originally located in the Abbey of Marradi, now kept in the parish church for security reasons.
Among these, the central polyptych stands out, depicting the Madonna enthroned with Child, accompanied by Saint Lawrence and Saint John the Evangelist, the Madonna of Mercy, Saint Reparata, and other saints. Completing the series are the Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian and a painting of Saint John Gualbert, founder of the Vallombrosan Order, depicted on a draped throne ready to ascend to heavenly glory.
